  1. Rejection. It’s tough enough submitting your work to publications, only to have it come back with a “thanks but no thanks” note. But when you’re freelance writing, rejection can be an even bigger blow to the ego. You’ve put your heart and soul into a piece, only to have it turned down time and time again.
  2. The waiting game. Once you’ve submitted a piece, you have to wait for the editor to get back to you. And sometimes, that can take weeks or even months. In the meantime, you’re left wondering if your work is good enough or if it’s just going to end up in the rejection pile.
  3. The editing process. Even if your work is accepted, it’s likely that it will need to be edited before it’s published. This can be a frustrating process, especially if you feel like you’ve already put your best foot forward.
  4. The pay. Let’s face it, most freelance writers don’t get paid nearly enough for their work. It can be difficult to justify the time and effort you put into your writing when you know you’re not going to be making much money from it.
  5. The competition. There are a lot of freelance writers out there, all vying for the same clients and publications. It can be tough to stand out from the crowd and get the attention of the people you want to work with.
