Why I Paid for a Stand Up Class
Putting money on the line gives you some skin the game.
Last year was at year I actually accomplished a few of my big goals. I finally achieved my salary goals. I bought my dream home. And I tried standup comedy.
I’ve always thought of myself as funny. I’ve had other people tell me that I’m funny. I’ve said that my dream was to quit my job and do standup… having never tried it.
So last year, a chance encounter with a standup teacher led me to signing up for a class. The problem was the instructor was getting married and moving so the class didn’t start for three months, during which time my enthusiasm waned and my anxiety grew. What was I thinking?
Fast-forward to the actual class. It was one of the most supportive environments I have ever encountered. The class was four people with diverse backgrounds and a teacher who was passionate about her art. It quickly became one of the highlights of my week.
Having paid for the class (which was not cheap!), I knew that I had to show up to get my money’s worth. Without the steep price tag, I probably would have dropped out.
After 8-weeks of class, multiple revisions, and hours of endless repeating my five minute set in my car as a drove around, I tried standup.
